The Market
Changed.

Most businesses didn't. A brand either gets clearer, more trusted, more relevant and more authoritative as conditions change, or it becomes progressively easier to ignore. Vanishing is rarely a collapse: it is a slow loss of legibility to the people and the systems that decide who gets considered.

“Trust creates momentum. Customers move toward brands they trust.”

This is not a motivational statement. It is a description of how markets actually work.

What Elevate or Vanish means.

Elevate or Vanish is a business thesis by Mike Millett: a brand either increases its clarity, trust, relevance and authority as conditions change, or it becomes progressively easier to find, understand, trust and select. Elevating is not cosmetic. It is the accumulation of clearer positioning, stronger proof, better trust signals, better systems, and greater legibility to both people and machines.

A company can vanish without a single obvious failure. There is no quarter where the graph breaks and no customer who writes in to say they could not tell what you did, so they hired somebody else. The sales cycle lengthens slightly. Acquisition costs creep. A referral arrives slightly less warm. Every number stays inside normal variation until the year it does not.

The reason it accelerated is that discovery fragmented. Customers now meet a business first in map listings, reviews, third-party comparison pages, social posts and AI-generated answers, and only then in anything the business controls. A person will let you correct them. A ranking system will not: it reads your name, category, listings, reviews and content, notices whether they agree with each other, places you, and never tells you it did.

The proof is the StratusClean transformation. Stratus Building Solutions sounded like a construction company and was a commercial cleaning franchise, and the correction that cost four seconds in conversation cost far more once the interpreting was being done by systems that do not ask. The response was not a prettier brand. It was four years of positioning, reviews, recruitment, training, data and accountability moving together, with the identity change arriving at the end of it rather than at the start.

Why businesses disappear.
And what to do about it.

Written from real experience. The StratusClean transformation is the proof. The chapters are the explanation of why it worked, and why the same forces are at work in every business right now.

This whole thing started
with a cleaning company.

Stratus Building Solutions was a successful franchise brand. They cleaned commercial buildings. The problem: nobody knew that. The name "Stratus Building Solutions" made people think construction. Franchise development. Commercial buildouts. Some people thought they physically built franchise locations.

So every sales conversation started with a correction. Every trade show started with an explanation. Every marketing dollar worked harder than it should have, just to overcome the name.

That's the cost of confusion. It compounds before you notice it.

“The market rarely announces decline. Businesses fade gradually through irrelevance, and they usually don’t notice until the slide is already underway.”

Founder, Digilu  ·  VP of Marketing, StratusClean  ·  Creator, The Marketing Helix

I didn't write this to become an author. I wrote it because I lived it. I was VP of Marketing during the Stratus Building Solutions to StratusClean transformation, and I watched what happened when clarity replaced confusion at scale.

The results were not subtle. They were measurable, compounding, and fast. And I've spent the years since trying to explain exactly why that happened, and why the same forces are at work in almost every business I've ever worked with.

I run Digilu, the Adaptive Brand Management company that takes ongoing responsibility for the trust, visibility, and relevance of brands that need to be chosen. I created The Marketing Helix, a framework for how customers actually move. And I wrote this, which may or may not eventually become a physical book. We'll see.

The Ecosystem

Four brands. One connected system built around trust, visibility, authority, and business survival.

Why we retired the funnel.

The thinking behind this book did not arrive fully formed. It evolved, the same way every business has to.

The Gravity Funnel asked the right question with the wrong shape. It understood that customers are pulled toward what they trust, but it still drew that pull as a funnel: a straight line down toward a single conversion.

FlyByGravity replaced push with attraction. You do not chase customers into a funnel. You build the kind of authority and trust that pulls them toward you, and lets that pull compound over time.

The Marketing Helix is where that thinking settled. It replaced the linear funnel with movement. Customers do not march down a chute. They circle, return, and rise as trust compounds. The helix describes how they actually move, and it is the model this work runs on today.

Three frameworks, one idea, stated plainly: Businesses evolve or become invisible. That is the thesis this book exists to defend.
